Q. WHAT HAPPENS IN A COUNSELLING SESSION?
A. A counselling session is usually one hour in duration. It is a process where the counsellor and the client/s work together to identify the issues that you are currently experiencing. You will be helped to develop a self-understanding and to look at the issues from a broader perspective. The counsellor does not give advice but works with you to identify where change can be made in order to achieve agreed goals.
Q. DO I NEED A REFERRAL?
A. No, you do not need a referral. You can either phone to make an appointment or send an email online to request a time and one of our counsellors will confirm a suitable appointment for you.
Q. IF I NEED RELATIONSHIP HELP, DO I BRING MY PARTNER?
A. If you have both decided that you want to come to counselling, then you would come together. That way you can talk about the issues that you are both experiencing. The counsellor is able to help you develop a clear picture of the pattern within the relationship and begin to work through these issues. However, if your partner is not willing to come along, then you can come on your own. This is an effective way of understanding the hurdles and blocks within the relationship and for you to gain new skills and insights into dealing with these.
Q. HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
A. This is something that you can talk through with your counsellor. It often depends on what the issues are and your individual needs.
Q. CAN I CLAIM A REBATE THROUGH MY HEALTH INSURANCE?
A. You will have to check with your health insurance provider.
Q. WILL MY INFORMATION BE CONFIDENTIAL?
A. All your personal information gathered during the provision of counselling services will remain confidential and secure except when:
- it is subpoenaed by a court; or
- failure to disclose the information would place you and/or another person at risk
- Your prior approval has been obtained to: (i) provide a written report to another professional agency e.g. a doctor or a lawyer; or (ii) discuss the material with another person advised by you.
